The biggest (only) hospital in the area is up in Shaibah Logistics Base, right outside Basra. We take medical problems that can't be treated at Bucca. We took one of the detainees up there. ADA- The Iraqis must have abandoned this one especially fast. Like before the war. There isn't a scratch on it. BFBS- The only FM in the region that speaks english. Building- Outside the base. I think it's a mosque. Buildings- the buildings on post are mostly modular, many are basically conexes. In the more central areas, they have these awnings over them. Bunker- This area must have been used by the Iraqi military, because there are a bunch of these. Chinook- They loaded the Rover on and took off. Where could this be going that it wouldn't simply be easier to just drive it there? As the crew chief told one of my guys the last time I was on one of these, "It's okay. You don't have to worry about it until it stops leaking oil." Conflicted- But I'm in a convoy because I want to go to the exit! Expectations- When driving a tactical vehicle, most people ignore stop signs. Tanks and humvees aren't built for stop & go driving. The base lowered its expectations at this intersection. Helicopter- The Iraqis either didn't abandon this helicopter fast enough or abandoned it way too fast. Hovel Depot- You can make your place into a dump. We can help. Inside gate- The flag was a nice touch. We don't even have an American flag at Bucca. Even the locals have a flag here, and the only locals I saw were the day laborers. International fuels- I have enough trouble finding the JP-8 pump. Now I've got to find an American-specific pump, too? Junkyard- Right outside the gate. LSA- Where people live, what the Army calls the Life Support Area. Mosque- It's a mosque. Old gate- For whatever this place used to be. 3 is on the way out. Pizza Hut- We didn't eat here. The chow hall is just too good to miss. Stansfield- Hazen's on leave. Store- Luckily, we already had bottled water. Sunset- On the way back. Tanks- A tank unit's area. Unit motto: If it's not Scottish, it's CRAP! Tent- This was a part of the gate complex. It's inside the old gate, and those barriers are part of the serpentine leading up to the current gate. 3 was taken on the way out. I don't know what this tent is for. It could be a taxi stand, but why would the British put a tent there, and why put an official sign there? I wish I had read it. Wall- Pretty scary. And I was inside the base when I took this. Wellhead- Bunches of these in the area. The concrete is to protect the country's only natural resource from the maniacs that drive here.
