ASO pictures: 13A- Deschenes' team on ASO with the port's rail entrance in the background. Wallace is on the gun. Barrier- Along the channel just north of the port the Iraqis started blocking the road. The first day I saw it was in 1-4. We got around off the road. Two days later I came through again. They had moved one of the concrete barriers but dug the other two farther down the road. 03-08 show the worst one. We had to work to get around it. Benchmark- This was in the middle of some open ground that had once been a farmer's field. When I see a sign in the middle of nowhere that says B.M. 1 I have to guess it's a benchmark. It is a bit primitive even by local standards, so I don't really know. Bow- North of the port where some fishing boats are docked there's a bow from one of the wars. Bridge- Our patrol area was expanded to the area north of the port. We were driving around familiarizing ourselves with the area (aimlessly) and decided that even if we were still in our area, crossing the shipping channel would definitely take us out of it. When we turned around we saw that the bridge was out anyway. Crane- One of the more visible cranes with a ridiculously small conex carrier tied up. Donkey cart- A guy on the road from Sioux Falls to the refinery. Drainage- Flats near the channel. Drydock- In the port. Fishing- We ran into these 2 kids by the port. I think the dark water bottles have oil in them, and the upright one is full of the fish they caught. When the tide goes out these fish are trapped in a large puddle. As it evaporates, they're easy to catch. Gun- It must have been pulled from one of the wrecked boats nearby. There were a bunch of old 20mm or 25mm shells on the beach here. Helicopter- 2 gray Blackhawks flew by. I guess that makes them Seahawks. Hotel- Sign on the road to the port just off Maui. Huang- In front of one of the wrecks. IP- A couple IPs passed us on their way to work at the checkpoint on Maui. I've never seen a Toyota motorcycle before. McCarthy- In front of one of the wrecks. Other gate- Leaving the refinery going along the pipeline to the channel. Pile- A mess of wrecks. Pipe- On the road between the refinery and the loading dock. Apparently someone here doesn't like us. Pipeline- Between the refinery and the loading dock. Well maintained. Port- Pictures of Umm Qasr's port from the peninsula East of it that juts South, paralleling the docks. That's Nault in 25. Port buildings- A couple of buildings there. Port gate- Not very impressive for the country's main port. Port wall- to he right of the gate. 3 and 4 are the rail entrance. It doesn't get used. Road sign- We don't go into town, but other Americans do. Salt Flat- Apparently this area floods. Sea dogs- Playing behind the port. Ships- Ships and smaller boats in the channel. These are the same ones that look like they're on the sand when seen from Bucca. Snake- We saw a snake. We checked a snake poster and saw that it was a pit viper called a rock snake. No kidding. Stansfield- Driving, on the gun and by the port with one of the "fishermen" that we met. Sunken- Either that or anchored very securely at low tide. Tugs- Just in case any really big ships show up. UXO- some unused flares stacked neatly near the channel and a bomblet in the badlands. Westcott- In front of one of the wrecks. Wreck- The tugs' predecessor.
