Pics of the trip back from Arifjan: On the way down I was on a bus, reading. On the way back I was in one of the humvees we'd picked up. When you don't have to pull security you can get a lot of picture taking done. 3 guys in a canoe- We've seen that this is the Arabic symbol for stopping. Obviously, you're not going anywhere in a canoe no matter how many paddlers you've got. It turns out that if you spread your paddlers out across the length of the canoe, you can move forward slowly. 6th Bde- You can never have too many Al-Tahreer brigades, and Kuwait apparently has a lot of them. Academy- Not to be confused with the Ali Al-Sabah Beauty Academy. Air base- We drove by an air base. Airport- The Arabic symbol for airplane looks just like a plane. Armor- I find it hard to believe that they've got 35 brigades of anything. Bridge1- No bridges allowed. Bridge2- Okay, bridges are allowed here. Bridge3- This town is a bridge-free zone. Buildings- Buildings in some of the cities we passed. Camel racing club- I'm not kidding. The truck's air intake blocked the rest of the sign, but that's what's at the next exit. Camels- Camels must be really bad swimmers, because they go to great lengths to keep them away from the water. City- Distant shots of one of the cities we passed. Commo sign- We passed a commo site up near Iraq. It was surrounded by these signs. CP- We went through a Kuwaiti checkpoint on the highway. Creative- What a name for a road! Damage- A small place near the border left over from the '90-'91 war. Desert- Thank God for the signs. I don't know how I'd find the desert otherwise. Dutch- Some Dutch at Navistar. El Camino Real- The King's highway. Emphatic- I don't know what these signs mean, but they obviously feel quite strongly about something. English- They tried to help me, but I still don't know what these are about. Fin- The end of the road. Fire station- A couple of fire stations Garage- It doesn't look like it's doing too well. They should look into buying a Mr. Lube franchise. Gas- a highway gas station. Gulf- You can see the water from here. Hesco- There's a Hesco barrier in the middle of nowhere that got really beaten up. Highway- The highway in the desert. Homes- A housing development somewhere. Humvee- A convoy moving south. I don't recognize the flag. I don't know- Like I said, I don't know. Iec cold- You can never have too much iec in the desert. Industrial- It's not all about oil. Intersection- We had to drive through town to change highways. It's a suburb of Kuwait City, I guess. Islam- Couldn't they have found a nicer setting? I'm not really encouraged to look. Kuwait City- We drove right by it. Lanes- Today, the right side of the road. Tomorrow, the right lane! Left- These turns sneak up on you. Men at work- A rest area. The place is just beat up, probably from '91. The sign doesn't look new. Mercedes- Talked with these guys for a bit at Navistar. Very pleasant guys. I forgot to ask which country they were from. Monument- Either that or a shopping mall entrance. Mosques- Lots of them around. Motorcycle- No stunt driving allowed. Motorway- It's different than a highway, road or expressway. Navistar- On the way in to Navistar from the Kuwaiti side. No approach- But I'm in the military! No entry- We were doing just over 50 past this. Oil rig- Sitting in the gulf. One tree- It looks lonely out there. Painted- Arabic for "I don't want the world, I just want your half." Pajero- a small Mitsubishi SUV. It's about the most popular one out here. Photography- Okay. Pipeline- A pipeline. Police station- A police station. Polypropyline- Kuwaiti scientists are hard at work trying to develop polypropyline. Pyramid- Maybe another shopping mall. Radar- It's not broken down. Lots of people pop their hoods when they park to keep the engine from getting hotter than it has to. Refineries- There are lots of them here. Who knew? Resort- Kuwait's also a great vacation spot. Right- It's a good thing they warn you about these sudden turns. Roadside trees- Kuwaitis like to line the highways with trees. Irrigated. Rover- I actually saw a civilian one. Sandy- Wind blowing across the road. Speed limit- Speed limit. Squiggles- Your guess is as good as mine. Stores- On the side of the road. Tampa- They have real street signs in Kuwait. Much nicer than the spray painted Jersey barriers in Iraq. Tarp- The tarp on our 5 ton got worse as we went north. The new ones aren't tied down with ropes, but have a rubber tube running the length of the bottom, stretched under the truck's hooks. It's not as good. Tees- I don't have any idea what these are. They look like huge concrete golf tees. They're built in sets of 8 and must be important because there are several of them just along the road we took. Tents- Out in the desert. Tilted- Something here is askew. Tire art- Maybe it's for sale. Trash- They still litter like crazy, but in Kuwait someone picks it up. Trees- The effect just isn't good. Truck limit- They didn't seem to be going slower. Turret ninja- From Navistar to Bucca, I was on the roof. With my rifle. The uparmored turret hatch locks into position as a rear shield. Warning- Scotsman ahead. Warning1- Angry Scotsman ahead? Water plant- I think that's one of the brands that we get supplied with.
